Every year I wonder if it is even worth the time to make New Year's resolutions? I rarely complete them, and they seem sort of like dream wishes. I want to click my heels twice and turn around and say, "Change me this year." Of course, I know that change in my life only comes when God helps in the transformation, and when I really want to change.
Today I was thinking as I ate a piece of chocolate, that this year, as every year, I will firmly resolve to lose weight. 2010 will be the year. But then I asked myself, why don't I just start today? If I wait until Jan 1, my normal reaction would be to eat everything I won't be able to eat after Jan. 1 now, thus adding to the pounds to be lost.
Maybe it would help if we were honest and called them New Year hopes! I hope that next year, I will continue to learn to eat healthily. I hope next year that I will move even closer in relationship with Jesus, etc.
So, are you willing to share your New Year's hopes?
And, by the way, have you ever actually kept a New Year's resolution??

Two weeks about have passed since I wrote about resolutions. I realized after New Year's day that I did have one resolution I wanted to try, and that was to dance more. I have managed that one time. I think since dancing can be done at home, it can be a good exercise program for me. I still think about a gym, but I injured myself years ago at a gym, and have been wary ever since.
As last week passed, I realized I am still working on a resolution that I began when we came to Carlisle...to give myself space. Normally, I try to finish five things before I walk out the door, and then arrive stressed and late to events. I remind myself to put in margins.
This week was so typical. Jim and I had the same meeting at 9 AM at the church building. At 8:30, Jim was out the door and heading over. At 8:40, I was getting dressed and showered. Jim gives more margin than I am yet comfortable with, but I definitely manage my life in ways that make me rush.
Has anyone else seen any changes in their lives?

This is sort of turning into a blog on this topic, rather than a forum. But, it is good for me to stay reflective about what changes are going on in my life.
So far, that session of dancing I mentioned is about the only time I have accomplished that goal.
I am continuing to stay more responsive to my body, mind and emotions' needs for rest and refreshing. I definitely need my full eight hours of sleep. Experts keep saying lack of sleep is not healthy for anyone. I need physical work, a sense of accomplishment, and down time for my brain. Most of all, I find I need unscheduled time, even if what is scheduled is fun and something I look forward to.
In Sunday School class, we have been studying the Linn's book, "Sleeping with Bread." They teach us about making an examine of consciousness, which is a way of listening to the Holy Spirit and your own inner self to see what directions we could take. Questions include: What gave me life today? Or what drained my life today? What was the best thing of today? What was the worst thing of today? As I have started to do this day by day, I am seeing clearer directions on what I should do more of, and what I should do less of. I highly recommend this book, which is short, has pictures and is easy to read.
So what is giving you life? Or draining your life?
